Botox...

2/21/2012 06:00:00 pm
Sooooo, I thought I'd do a little bit of a different post today.
As you may (or may not) know, I used to work in a medical spa, and my fave fave fave aspect of it - apart from the fact I truly love beauty and skincare etc - was really was the free treatments!  I worked at said medi-spa for a year, aged 22-23, and (shock horror!) I was given botox.  Now 22 is really definitely no age to start having botox.  To be honest, a responsible botox practitioner shouldn't be doling out botox to anyone kind of under the 25 year old mark.  Firstly, hardly anyone needs botox under 25.  I thought I had the worst glabeller lines ever - the vertical line between my eyes - but, after being botox free for a year (and trust me, my botox has defos disappeared now), I hardly notice the line I thought was so horrendous.
So the facts.
Firstly, your medical history must always, always be taken by the practitioner, and talked through with yourself.  If this doesn't happen run as fast as your teeny little legs will carry you out of the building.  This is irresponsible, and is a sign that something is not quite right.  In the same way, you must always have a consultation with the practitioner who will carry out your botox treatment, so they can address your expectations and explain a few bits to you.  They should explain that it typically lasts around 3-6months, at which point you may have to come back for more. Risks of botox include drooping, especially of the eyelid and eyebrow, allergic reactions, shock from the injections - I'm sure you can think of more!  This is why it is vital to go to someone reputable.
Essentially, botox is derived from a poison called Botulinum toxin - Botox is actually a brand name! - so please be mindful of this in your decision to have the treatment.
Top: Kylie - Eyebrows look artificially raised from an overload of botox.
Bottom: Dana Delany: admitted she had botched botox, as you can see, one eye is drooping.
Right before your treatment, the practitioner should ask you to make a facial expression based on where you want your botox, so in my case, it was a frown - which allowed the nurse to use a white pencil to mark the injection sites.
So does botox hurt?  Well it depends on your pain threshold.  I have a high threshold - so much so that I had lip filler injections without anaesthetic (this is a story for another day) - and as such, I found it more uncomfortable as opposed to painful.  It felt like a sharp scratch, which made my eyes sting, but was over quite quickly.  After this, you should be advised not to lie down for a couple of hours, and to make the face you made earlier over and over again for a few hours to direct the botox into the right place.  Your practitioner should always under use the botox on you, asking you to come back in two weeks, when the full effects of your treatment can be seen, and a top-up added if needed.  It really does take around a week to see results.
Kimmy K is a cautionary tale, botox didn't agree with her at all, and left her bruised.  I'm sure many of you have seen this episode, but if not, it's Season 5, episode 3 of Keeping up with the Kardashians.
The reason you should wait until around 30 to have the botox is to ensure your body doesn't almost become immune to the botox.  To explain to a friend what I meant by this, I said that if she started using it fairly consistently from age 20, at age 63, her face would be touching her knees.  Of course this is an exaggeration I used to really put my point across, but use of botox from an early age really decreases its efficacy - probably at a time when you'll actually need it! The form of botox I had was known as 'baby botox' and is given for really quite superficial lines in the younger end of the spectrum, so around the 30 year mark.  If you are trying botox for the first time, perhaps this is something you would like to discuss with your practitioner!
I hope this interested a couple of you!
Botox is a wonderful short-term fix, but is expensive - at least £100 - and is measured by area.  So, your line in between your eyebrows is one area, the lines on your forehead another, and the lines around your mouth are the third.  Botox is charged per area!  Take note though, around your mouth, botox can look really weird - perhaps think about fillers here.  Also, the long-term safety of this really isn't known - it hasn't been around for a hundred years, so that's always a slight issue!

The owl and the pussycat went to sea in a beautiful pea green boat...

2/21/2012 03:30:00 pm
They took some honey and plenty of money wrapped up in a five pound note...
The owl looked up to the stars above, and sang to a small guitar...
Oh, lovely pussy, oh pussy my love...
What a beautiful pussy you are you are...
What a beautiful pussy you are
This is my owl.  He's going to live on my keys because my monkey fell off.

L-R: Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector, Caudalie Beauty Elixir, Alpha H Liquid Gold.
Bottom of picture:   YSL Top Secrets Flash Touch - Wake up Eye Care
Truth be told, I was getting kind of tired of using some of my old products, but carried on as I knew they worked well.  However, I feel that my skin got used to the products, and it has given me a nudge in a new direction via the medium of spots!  Yuk but lol!  I have more or less figured out the spots - touch wood - but as they appear on my chin, it results in scars, and I don't like scars.  Today (16th Feb - dunno when I'm gonna post this atm), I received two littttttle packages that have brought light to my life!  The first product is a glycolic treatment product, which I hope will help the turnover of my skin, and help rid me of my scars quickly:  it is one I have seen on QVC millions of times, but never ordered until now as I am at the end of my metaphorical tether!  It is the Alpha-H Liquid Gold:
The website says A powerful night time resurfacing and firming lotion for the skin. This exclusive complex jump-starts the skin’s metabolism, tightens enlarged pores, and delivers lighter, clearer and more even skin tone. Also an effective treatment for acne when used in conjunction with our other acne solutions.  In terms of ingredients, it contains one of my fave acids: glyyyyyyyyyyyyycolic! Woop! I have high hopes for this, and will report back on immediate, intermediate and long-time effects!  Please be careful re using this product.  My skin is very tolerant to types of acids, and as such, I experience no adverse reactions from this, but if you are new to the world of acids, you really need to go slow and do a patch test.  It takes a while to build up tolerance.  Update since I wrote this: I have used this twice now, and bloody love it!  My skin is so much clearer, which I can only attribute to this as my other new skincare bits and bobs will defos take a little while to achieve results! Really looking forward to seeing more results from this.
The second product I purchased was the Caudalie Beauty Elixir:
Inspired by the "elixir of youth" used by Queen Isabelle of Hungary, Caudalie Beauty Elixir smoothes features, tightens pores and provides instant burst of radiance to the complexion. Caudalie Beauty Elixir is a favourite of Victoria Beckham's - she uses it on top of her make-up for a glowing complexion! Main ingredients: extracts of grape essential oil of rosemary, orange blossom and rose extracts, benzoin, myrrh essential oils of oraganic balm mint and mint.   I have heard that this is brilliant used as a toner to help combat acne, and have picked up the small 30ml size for now to see how I get on with it.  As of two days use, I am loving it, and loving the smell - I can't quite put my finger on what it reminds me of, but it is lovely.
The third product which I didn't mention earlier (blush), but you can see in the first pic, is the Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector.
My Estee Lauder Even Skintone Illuminator just isn't cutting it with my new scars, so I picked this up.  Dermatologist-developed to be safe and comfortable in improving the appearance and evenness of skin tone by 53%. Helps reduce the appearance of dark spots, age spots, traces of a blemish past. For all ethnicities. Can be used comfortably twice daily, and long-term. Suitable for all skin types and tones.I was originally going to buy the new Kiehl's serum, but the salespersons in the shop knew less about skincare than me, and just read stuff to me off the poster when I asked about effects and active ingredients.  But the Clinique lady really was knowledgeable about this, and even did a skin analysis for me, and got everything spot-on!  The serum is a yellowy colour, and very light, almost hydrating too.  Takes a minute to sink in, but skincare should always, always take a second to sink in, otherwise you know they're pumping you full of seriously unwanted chemicals.  Remember - your skin is a barrier between you and the world, if it just let anything absorb into you quickly, you would be in big trouble.  You should find that your skin always thinks about letting your products through before it actually does!  Anyways, back to the skincare assistant - she recommended - and gave me a sample of - the Clinique Even Better Foundation, and let me tell you, I adore it!  I will defos be buying that next time Debenhams has a 10% off code!
So, there is the re-vamp of my skincare, I'll let you know how I fare!  The only thing left to get is a brush head for my Clari, which incidentally, I posted a review on yesterday!
Big fat p.s.: any kind of acid - especially glycolic requires a SEPERATE daily SPF to be used.  Aka not the one in your moisturiser, not the one in your foundation, but a seperate one.  Again, the Clinique serum (and any other pigmentation-reducing, dark-spot correcting, and brightening serums) require an SPF to be worn daily.  Think about, the sun is the main cause of ageing, and all these dark spots, dullness, lines etc are caused mainly by the sun, so if you use one of these type of serums and omit the sunscreen you will counteract the actions of your serum, and will never get anywhere!  So sunscreen OK?!
This is the one I loooooooooooooove:
Smells like peaches=]

p.s. I did something a lil fancy pants with the pics - hope you liked them!

You brush your teeth everyday... Clarisonic review!...

2/18/2012 03:30:00 pm
...but do you brush your face?
So, my ultimate uhb-session with skincare continues!
My Clari!
This little gadget has been in my possession for nearly a year now, and has unfortunately hardly been used.  It was ordered the day before I was made redundant, but I was allowed to (sneakily) still purchase it at cost price.  It is the Clarisonic Plus kit!  I think I bought it for cost price at around £80 - when it retails at around £180, and the Clarisonic mia (with less functionality) costs around £120: can you believe the mark-up in prices?!  Anyways, so why have I not been using this wonder product?  Well I have tried.  Twice.  But of course, the ensuing break out caused by the purging of my skin, put me off both times.  UNTIL NOW!  I have recently - I think it was Boxing Day - started using this little gadget again.  Religiously.  Twice a day.
Of a morning I now try and hot compress with a trusty flannel, then - using my cleanser of choice, which is the No7 Beautiful Skin Foaming Cleanser or Dead Sea Spa Magik Black Mud Soap.  I apply the cleanser, mixed with water onto my face, and start my little gadget up.  This really is effortless cleansing at its best!  You press the power button, a beep comes on, move the clari in circular motions, using little pressure, over your forehead.  After 20secs another BEEP, move it onto your nose and chin - I make sure I get into the sides of the nose, and take it slightly under the chin too - this again is 20 secs and BEEP move to cheek 1 for 10 secs BEEP cheek 2 for 10 secs.  And that is it!  Face done!  I do make modifications to this routine - whacking the clari on again if I fancy doing my neck.  I also do something a bit naughty and mix an exfoliant  (my choices include No7 Men's face exfoliator, bit of Lush Dark Angels, St Ives Microdermabrasion Scrub and the new No7Scrub that matched my cleanser) in with the cleanser - do NOT take my advice and do this, do as I say, not as I do, as you are generally not advised to use a scrub with the clari.  And of an evening (or generally very late at night for me), I always double cleanse, so I will generally use the Boots Botanics Cleansing balm, really massage it in to get the thick wall of makeup off my face, and the blood pumping, and use a hot flannel to take it off, then start my clarisonic routine.
Now, I have only been using this about 6 weeks regularly - remember 6-8 weeks is the time it takes for cell turnover, so this is the optimum time to test and I can say I definitely have noticed a clear-ness to my skin that was not there before.  My skin purged like hell at first, my face was (slight exaggeration) like a dot-to-dot picture.  It is not an exfoliation tool, so will not dissolve any pigmentation miraculously, and as said, caused me to break out around my chin, but even with the break out, there is a clarity that has become even better over time!  I still am breaking out around my chin, but I think that probably no longer has to do with the Clari, and it's getting better due to the products mentioned in my problemo skin treatments post. I am hoping that my skin continues to become clearer, and hopefully the spots decide to run away!  I'll update you in a bit!
Bit of info - the brush head defos needs a change - remember I have been using this on and off for about 9months, but everyday for about a month.  The heads should be changed the same as an electric toothbrush head - every 3months.  As for bacteria and all that malarkey, I use an antibacterial hand wash to wash the brush head after every cleanse (we have a fancy schmancy 'no-hands' one).
I've got a revamped skincare routine coming up tomorrow!
As usual, feel free to ask questions!

The Goddess Experience...

2/18/2012 02:00:00 pm
..by Gisele Scanlon.
This is just a beautiful book filled with girly bits and pieces.  It includes some recipes, where to go in cities such as Paris and London, pictures of beautiful things, how to make the perfect cup of tea, and even tips on skincare and make-up.  You could literally randomly flick to a page, and amuse yourself for hours on end!
I'm sure you'll agree, it is just a perfect book for flicking through on a rainy day, snuggled under a blanket with a cuppa =]..or a lazy Sunday afternoon...

p.s. I have seen this book in the pound shop a couple of times - keep your eyes out, it's worth a hell of a lot more!

Another Kiko Haul!...

2/17/2012 06:00:00 pm
This is getting to be a bit of a bad habit.  I said to my mother - who incidentally is buying a few bits here and there from kiko when she generally doesn't purchase make-up - that Kiko is such good make up and so reasonably priced to which she replied "not reasonably priced if you buy something everytime you go in" which is true but hey!  Anyways, just two purchases this time - one a necessity: the sharpener - because I needed a sharpener that was a) sharp b) had a big bit and a small bit c)sharpened into itself.  And the other thing is a blush stick, which is part of their new collection, and is just SO pink and SO me.  In fact it's called 'doll pink' which sums me and my make up up in a nutshell.
Pretty Pretty Pretty! Btw, I think the sparkles are left over from other swatches, not from the Blush Stick!
